Default Yankees Sign OF Marcus Thames

Quote:
Jon Heyman of SI.com reports that the Yankees have signed outfielder Marcus Thames.

Terms of the contract are not yet known. Thames could enter a left field platoon with Randy Winn. Generally considered a poor defensive outfielder, Thames has value in his .845 career OPS against left-handed pitching. The Yankees will also benefit from having an extra right-handed bat in the outfield. Thames, originally drafted by the Yankees in 1996, batted .252/.323/.453 with 13 home runs in 258 at-bats last season.

Wow they added a guy that is very underrated. His average isn't that good, but he brings even more pop to the Yankees lineup. Depends on how much the deal is for, but this could be a very underrated move.

Thoughts?

Nice bat off the bench, he certainly could put up some serious power numbers playing at Yankee Stadium. Very nice signing.

Update

Quote:
Yankees signed outfielder Marcus Thames to a minor league contract.
Thames receives $900,000 if he makes the major league roster out of spring training, which he will be invited to. He will compete with Randy Winn and Brett Gardner for playing time, as well as provide an extra right-handed bat in the outfield. Thames is a poor defensive outfielder, but he rocks left-handed pitching to the tune of an .845 career OPS. Originally drafted by the Yankees in 1996, Thames batted .252/.323/.453 with 13 home runs in 258 at-bats last season for the Tigers. Detroit released him in early November.

The guy can put a charge into the ball as a pinch hitter/Spot starter. This is a nice move by the Yankees

I like this signing for the Yankees, it improves their bench.

It'll be around July when Yankees fans start getting sick of Thames. He provides some highlight reel swings, is a good guy, and will get along with Curtis, but the guy is way too inconsistent. Strikes out a ton, and if hes making contact its a HR or an out. Not much base hits from Marcus.

That being said, I wish him the best of luck. He deserves a spot on a club, and it mine as well be the best one.

He is in the minor leagues in case Hoffman doesnt stick... so how the Yankees will be tired of a minor leaguer that COULD be A PLATOON player because he fills every need that Gardner lacks in by June is.. I dunno... off base and wrong?

Pretty low risk/high reward signing, Thames should be able to provide some righty power off the bench, I doubt he'll play the field much at all though.
