![]() So the Orioles are finally coming back down to reality. After being 2 games above .500, only 4 games out of the division lead, and players playing really well, the normal Orioles are back. They have lost two in a row, 8 out of their last 10, and now the veterans are going to be getting ready to pack their bags. Veterans like Aubrey Huff, Aaron Cook, & Jeremy Guthrie could be on there way out, less then a month after Luke Scott & Melvin Mora were shipped out in a deal for slugger Prince Fielder. Andy MacPhail hasn't come right out and said that the veterans are going to be moved, but he is definately leaning that way. ![]() "What I have done with this team so far, is give the fans something to be excited about. Without fans, it doesn't matter how well the team plays, you need fans to support your team. When I arrived, this team was full of veterans who weren't ready to win games, and a farm system that wasn't good enough to win in 5 years. We aren't quite ready to win yet, but we have a farm system that is ready to win in 5 years." A player that is expected to be a very big trade piece for the Orioles is Aubrey Huff. Last season, he was actually at the bottom of the MVP race, and would have been higher if he was on a team that won games. The expectations were for Huff to come in this year and have a solid year, but not quite as good as last years. So far, he is having a season similar to slugger Prince Fielder, which is something not everyone can say they have done. ![]() "I love Baltimore", said Huff when asked about his trade rumors. "But at the same time, you have to have an open mind in this league. Everyone is replacable, anyone can be moved. I understand the direction that this Baltimore organization is taking. We came into this season with an open mind hoping we could win this year, but we all know that this team is about 2 years away from being a world series contender. I would love to be here when that time comes, but if they feel like they can get more pieces for that time by trading me, hopefully I can go somewhere and help another team win." "Aubrey is a very important piece to this team", Trembley said. "He is having an amazing start to this year, and unfortunately, when a player is having a year like that on a team that is below .500, you have to go out and look at the market for him. We aren't going out and saying to teams Huff is available, get him for cheap. Aubrey is an amazing player, and for amazing players, you expect amazing deals back for them. You could look at all 30 teams in the major leagues, and Aubrey could go to probably 25 of those teams and plug right in as the #4 or #5 hitter. Guys like that are rare to find, and we would love to keep him here. For that reason, we are going to look at offers for him, but trust me, we aren't just trading a player like Huff to trade him, we are trading him to get a great package back for him." ![]() Another guy rumored to be putting out on the market is Jeremy Guthrie. Now Jeremy is a little bit different of a case then Huff, because he is struggling this year. Last year, he was considered a very solid pitcher, this year, with an ERA above 5.00, the only thing teams can hope for is that a change of scenery can help him get his numbers back down. "This isn't a guy who is in his first year in the league" said Trembley. "He has been here long enough to know that when he is struggling, he needs to switch things up to get back on pace. Remember that this team needs a veteran in the rotation. It's hard to throw 5 guys out there under 25 years old and hope to win games, they need a leader. We have planned on Jeremy being that guy, but like Huff, it doesnt hurt to listen to offers. So we'll listen." It could be a long interesting summer for the Orioles. This team has enough talent to start winning games, but if they dont start winning soon, some changes will be coming. |
