Default Kovalchuk sells his soul to the Devil for 17 years

17 year contract worth over 100 million

    http://sports.espn.go.com/new-york/n...ory?id=5392170

I can't wait to be 38 in my mid life crisis when this contract is up.

Nah, you'll be dead of liver failure by the time the contract is up.

Nothin like guaranteeing a player a contract until he's 44 years old.

The idea of contracts like these is that Kovalchuk can retire whenever he wants and his contract no longer counts after he retires. Probably front loaded so he's cheap against the cap in his ll30s.

I knew the NHL was going to reject this. No one ever deserves a 17yr contract. He wont be playing when he's 44. The NHL will probably add the rule to the CBA now that players cant sign deals longer than 12yrs or something.

I think 17yrs is OK but not at his age.
Like if Stamkos signed a 17yr deal next year when he's 21yrs old, it would be OK since he would only be 38 when the contract is up, which is an acceptable age. 44 is just stupid.

I think these long term, front loaded contracts should not be allowed to exceed the age of 39, and that should be the only stipulation.

I don't know if you noticed, but the last 6 years of the contract, he would be getting paid 500k a year...
