Police have charged former major league pitcher Ambiorix Burgos(notes) with kidnapping and attempted murder after his ex-wife said she was forced to eat rat poison.

Judge Freddy Frias ordered Burgos on Saturday to remain in jail for three months while prosecutors prepare the case.

The 26-year-old is suspected of kidnapping Dilenia Reynoso on Thursday from a prosecutor’s home where she was hiding after allegedly receiving death threats from him.

In 2008, authorities dropped charges against Burgos, who was accused in a fatal hit-and-run involving two women.

Last year, a New York jury found Burgos guilty of assaulting his girlfriend in a hotel near Shea Stadium. He was sentenced to nine months in jail.

Burgos pitched for the Kansas City Royals from 2005-06 and the New York Mets in 2007. He was released by the Mets in December 2008.

Officials at the federal courthouse in Washington, D.C., say seven-time Cy Young winner Roger Clemens will be arraigned on Monday afternoon on criminal charges.

Clemens will appear before U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton for allegedly lying to Congress about his use of steroids.

A federal grand jury indicted Clemens Aug. 19 on charges he made false statements to Congress about his use of performance-enhancing drugs.

The six-count grand jury indictment said that Clemens obstructed a congressional inquiry with 15 statements that he made under oath, including denials that he had ever used steroids or human growth hormone. The indictment alleged that he lied and committed perjury regarding the same matters.

Clemens has denied any wrongdoing.

All charges relate to Clemens' February 2008 testimony before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.

Clemens could be sentenced to up to 30 years in prison and faces a $1.5 million fine, but the New York Times reports a conviction likely would bring a 15- to 21-month sentence.

In the 2008 Congressional committee hearing, Clemens flatly denied he had ever used PEDs. That contradicted testimony by former trainer and friend Brian McNamee.

McNamee told investigators for the 2007 Mitchell Report that he injected Clemens with steroids and human growth hormone at least 16 times in 1998, 2000 and 2001. Clemens denied the allegations, and both repeated their conflicting claims at the congressional hearing on Feb. 13, 2008, with Clemens saying: "I have never taken steroids or HGH."

The expectation around baseball is that outfielder Manny Ramirez will be placed on waivers early this week, according to baseball sources.

The Los Angeles Dodgers could have put Ramirez on waivers on Monday but would not do so, ESPN.com's Jayson Stark reports. Monday was the first day the Dodgers could have taken that action because it was the first business day after the outfielder came off the disabled list.

Matt Stairs hit his 21st homer as a pinch-hitter Saturday, the most in big league history.

The Fredericton native connected on a two-run shot in the eighth inning of the San Diego Padres' 6-5 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers, passing Cliff Johnson for most pinch-hit homers.

Padres manager Bud Black said the record is very special. He called the pinch-hitter role one of the most difficult in baseball.

Stairs has 262 home runs in a career that began with the Montreal Expos in 1992. His most famous homer as a pinch-hitter came with two outs in the eighth inning of Game 4 of the 2008 National League championship series. His two-run drive lifted the Phillies to a 7-5 victory over the Dodgers.

I remember him playing for Toronto. Was a solid hitter then, and now.
